NVP Brightstar began life inside British Telecommunications plc (BT) as BT Brightstar. Brightstar was the BT incubator responsible for creating, funding and spinning out technology-based companies from BT's laboratory facility at Adastral Park. It was originally created in January 2000 with the goal to commercialize BT's extensive patent portfolio of 14,000 patents and some 1,600 unique inventions.
Throughout its history, Brightstar has been responsible for launching a number of early stage companies. Subsequently it focused on driving the value of the companies up through increased revenues by creating a corporate accelerator. The Brightstar brand became well recognized inside and outside BT for its innovative approaches to creating value from the corporate intellectual property portfolio and challenging the models of research exploitation.
Brightstar shared a common research and business heritage with New Venture Partners from its inception. Recognizing the potential for creating a new global corporate venturing vehicle, we siezed the opportunity to build a new partnership.
Thus in March 2003, we spun Brightstar out of BT to form NVP Brightstar. Simultaneously, we incorporated, funded and spun out four companies from BT. BT remains a Limited Partner in our newest fund and NVP Brightstar remains closely associated with BT Exact through our exclusive right to continue to spin-out companies out from its R&D, professional and computing services base.
NVP Brightstar continues the tradition of both its parents in the commercialization and entrepreneurial approach to the exploitation of corporate intellectual property, strengthened now by a larger portfolio of companies, direct access to BT's corporate research labs and offices in both the USA and the UK.
